Walcha Visitor Information Centre

Attraction - Building and Structure, Visitor Information Centre

Walcha Tourism offers the traveller with an abundant array of information on the area of the Walcha District and towns found within Big Sky Country and other coastal destinations.

The Visitor Information Centre has a huge map for inspirational outdoor activities to be easily found within the district, highlighting Apsley waterfalls, Tia waterfalls, Budds Mare Lookout, Riverside (over 600 metres in depth from the rim of one of Australia’s largest gorge systems).

The Werrikimbe and Willi Willi National Parks are not to be missed, offering excellent camping, bushwalking and other outdoor activities, like trying to wrap your arms around some of Gondwanna Lands ancient Antarctic Beech Trees.

Be sure to stop in for a history lesson or to simply find out where all the good trout or bass fishing spots are. Walcha’s topography lends itself to some great off road 4WDriving, motorcycling the Oxley or Thunderbolts Roads (best rides in Australia) or trail bike riding in State Forests or the National Parks.

Walcha is fast becoming a mecca for artists whom travel great distances to view the huge sculptures. The sculptures are found all over the town’s landscape. These pieces of art have been created by local, national and international artisans, and the Walcha Council has been very supportive of creating something really different for a regional town.

Stop in at the Pioneer Cottage, over ten buildings full of yesteryears memorabilia, including ancient Aboriginal artefacts and a carved ceremonial tree which is very unique. Also housed in a hanger is the first Tiger Moth aircraft to spread fertiliser, opening the district up to much higher sheep and cattle production, which Walcha is renown all over the world for, along with its superfine wool production.

Accommodation varies from earthy Farm Stay Retreats, modern cosy historic B&B's, great motels with fine dining, or some old fashioned pub rooms with all the trimmings. Our Caravan Park is rated 4 stars and is one of the most accommodating parks in NSW (even providing heated flooring and piped music in the sparkling clean amenities block)!

This whole area is off the beaten track. It is easily accessed by the shorter route north/south along the Thunderbolts Way. Saves travellers an hour’s drive which is very scenic, accending/decending nearly 1000 metres onto the southern end of the New England Plateau. Alternatively, head East/West on the Oxley Highway, at Bendemeer or the Pacific Highway near Port Macquarie.

If you wish to slow down, smell the eucalyptus, stare at the starry skies, or simply indulge yourself in some fine foods and great local hospitality, choose Walcha as your next destination to get away from it all.
